Throughout the day, participants will engage in a series of interactive activities designed to foster connections and build friendships. They will rotate through each activity, taking a worksheet with them to document their experiences. Each student will have the opportunity to meet someone new in every activity, resulting in meaningful connections with at least five new people. At the end of each activity, they will answer questions about their new friend to show what they have found out.
Activities for the day usually include:
– spear throwing and atl atl games
– fire lessons and competitions
– blindfold walk and trust games
– foraging
– stretcher races and first aid
– emergency shelter building
To conclude the day, students will participate in an exciting Olympic games style race that incorporates the skills they’ve learned throughout the day. This fun and energetic activity will serve as a celebration of their newfound friendships. Participants will also have the chance to share a little about a new friend they’ve made, setting the tone for a year of camaraderie and support.
Q: How will the event address any concerns or anxieties students may have about starting secondary school?
A: Our instructors are trained to create a welcoming and reassuring environment for students. Throughout the day, they will provide guidance and support to help students feel more comfortable and confident with their peers. Additionally, there will be opportunities for students to express any concerns they may have and receive guidance on how to navigate the transition successfully.
Q: How does the event support students who may be struggling with the transition to secondary school?
A: Our experienced staff are trained to recognise signs of anxiety or uncertainty among students. They actively engage with participants, offering encouragement and support to those who may be finding the transition challenging. Our inclusive approach ensures that every student feels valued and supported throughout the day.
Q: How does the Year 7 Get to Know You Day contribute to students’ personal development?
A: At Polaris Outdoor, personal development is at the core of everything we do. Our event provides students with valuable opportunities to build confidence, communication skills, and resilience in a supportive outdoor setting. Students develop essential life skills that will serve them well beyond their school years. This is a foundational event that builds trust and a solid base from which to build upon.
Q: What is the best progression after completing the Get to know you day?
A: Our recommended pathway would be to embark on the survival training programme next – this builds skills across the board to enable students to be comfortable in any environment and discover so much about themselves in the process. Students can work through each of the 3 levels: beginner, intermediate and advanced. Those who have completed this and gone on expeditions around the world with us have describe it as “life changing”. A real formative experience that stays with them forever.
