What You Will Do

Day and weekend sessions can include:

  • Fire craft: light, sustain and use fire wisely in a range of wilderness scenarios and for cooking foraged food.
  • Shelter and camp craft: learn to build a shelter that will keep you safe and warm in the worst of conditions. Ropes, knots, tarps or natural resources all offer a home from home.
  • Carving and woodland tools: learn to safely create useful objects and discover the clever tools of our ancestors.
  • Fauna and flora ID: discover plants and animals, their habitats, uses for food and medicine, impact on society, countryside management and folklore.
  • Animal tracking: examine animal behaviour, tracks and signs, their importance for sustainable ecosystems, and their role in the lifestyles of people throughout the ages.
  • Search and rescue: establish survival priorities, learn to lead others, solve problems to save lives and survive in any emergency.
  • Remote first aid: gain the confidence to keep calm and to look after yourself and others anywhere in the world.
  • Navigation techniques: wild navigation, map and compass use, night skills and route planning.
  • Expedition groundwork: bring together planning, preparation, safety and logistics to become confident trail blazers.

Do I need any prior experience in bushcraft or outdoor activities to join these courses?

No prior experience is necessary! Our courses cater to participants of all skill levels, from beginners to seasoned outdoor enthusiasts. Our instructors will provide comprehensive guidance and support throughout the sessions.

What should I bring with me for the day or weekend courses?

Participants should come prepared with weather-appropriate clothing, sturdy footwear, suncream, bug spray, and a water bottle. It’s also helpful to bring a notebook and pen for taking notes during the sessions.

Are the courses suitable for children or families?

Absolutely! We welcome participants of all ages, including families with children. Our instructors are experienced in working with diverse groups and can tailor the activities to suit the abilities and interests of participants of different ages.

Will I need to purchase any equipment or tools for the course?

No need to worry about purchasing equipment or tools! We provide all necessary tools and materials
for the activities. However, if you have any personal outdoor gear that you prefer to use, feel free to bring it along, we will need to confirm you can safely use them.

Can I book a private session for a group or corporate event?

Amazing Arctic Expedition. Lewes Old Grammar School worked with Polaris to send a group of year 10 students on an incredible week in Finland. The students were trained in Arctic survival skills and learnt the most enormous amount about themselves. A fabulous opportunity. The staff at Polaris were motivational and Mat is a great leader making sure that everyone is participating fully and getting the most out of the opportunity.

The Arctic expedition was life changing for our students. Over the course of the week the students gelled as a team, I saw their true colours shining through and they all loved it. Excellent feedback from the parents. Our instructors were absolutely top class. Not only in their professionalism with the students but their dedication to ensuring staff also got lots out of the trip and we’re comfortable. Meeting other Really Wild instructors out in Finland also showed that this level of expertise, professionalism and friendliness was consistent across the company. Would thoroughly recommend!!

Our daughter went on an Arctic Expedition with her school which was organized & managed by Polaris. She had the most amazing time & in a single trip accomplished several things that could be considered life experiences such as seeing the Northern lights, sleeping outdoors in a survival shelter & husky sledding. The Polaris Team were a huge part of what made the trip exciting for the pupils involved, & clearly had the ability to mix their experience & professionalism with the fun & understanding required to manage a group of adolescent school children, which must have been challenging. It was also great that they took the time & effort to give each pupil their own individual & honest feedback in writing after the trip, which we consider is worthwhile advice for our daughter moving forward.
